Avoiding Losses and maximising file recovery chances.

If you are reading this having had a disaster ...
DON'T DO ANYTHING
until you have read our disaster recovery pages and/or contacted CompuSolve!

However, if so far you have been successful in avoiding such a disaster, then please take note of the following points. By following these simple and practical points, CompuSolve hopes that you will minimise data loss and be able to recover gracefully from that unexpected turn of events. Disaster Recovery is no picnic and it comes at a cost in  both time taken to recover or if the worst happens, the time taken to replace those files in staff and loss of new work time which the catch up is done.

  • Do Regular Backups using at least several media.
This greatly increases your chances of recovering lost files and simplifies the process, no matter what caused the loss. It means that you have more than one or two disks - CD, DVD or tape. Do not rely on floppy disks or flash drives as your only file backup. Backup often so that you have several days worth of backups - after all, you may not miss a file until it is needed, and last night's backup may just have written over it. CompuSolve recommends to its clients that there should be a backup disk of whatever sort  for each day of the week and each week of the month -even a quarterly one as well.

  • CompuSolve can advise on the best backup setup for your requirements, install it and train you in its use.

  • Install a well-known Anti-Virus product, use it and update no less than weekly. Have your PC set to automatically update whenever you log on to the internet.
Do not allow anyone to use a disk of any sort without first checking it with your antivirus software.

  • Maximise scanning of emails.
Scan all files from "outside" sources, such as employee home PCs and other companies.
Encourage / require staff who work at home to have their own Anti-Virus protection. CompuSolve can supply and install Anti-virus products, and train you in its use.

  • Be very suspicious of any emails from unknown sources and treat ALL emails with care.
    • The "friendlier" the email message, the more suspicious any attachment is!
    • NEVER have your PC automatically open/execute E-mail attachments.
    • If you can make file extensions visible on E-mails, do so, as this helps with virus identification.

  • CompuSolve can help you configure your email software to minimise problems, and/or to install a Firewall.

  • Defragment your hard disk regularly.
This greatly increases the chances CompuSolve will be able to recover deleted files from your hard disk should the worst happen, and you do not have a backup.
(As an added bonus, your PC will run more efficiently anyway!)

  • CompuSolve can train you in the use of the Defragmenter.

  • Don't set Scandisk to "Fix" errors automatically if it finds a problem.
It is much safer to let Scandisk only report the extent of a problem to you, before you decide what to do, if necessary with experienced help from us.

  • If you get a Scandisk report showing a large amount of files and directories are "missing" or "damaged", and Scandisk reports a large amount of "lost" files or fragments, and you do not have recent backups of precious data from that disk, contact us before taking action!

Scandisk "solves" some file system problems by removing information about directories and files that have become "lost" due to various causes, thereby making it harder for us to recover your precious data!

CompuSolve should be your first contact if Scandisk suggests there has been serious data loss on your system.
